Questions to Discuss or Ponder:

  1. Where do you see the current obsession with “how we look” showing up in your world?
  2. Who are the “scribes” and the “Pharisees” today? What would Jesus say to them today?
  3. How do you “hear” this list of “woes”? Is Jesus angry? sad? frustrated? A little of all of that? Explain why you think so.
  4. Which one of the “woes” Jesus pronounces strikes closest to your home? Why?
  5. Where might God be calling you to “speak truth to power”? How can that be a way of bringing peace to the community or to your life?
  6. Recall a time when you focused on the plank rather than the splinter (see Matthew 7:3-5). What happened?
