Questions to Discuss or Ponder:
- Where do you see the current obsession with “how we look” showing up in your world?
- Who are the “scribes” and the “Pharisees” today? What would Jesus say to them today?
- How do you “hear” this list of “woes”? Is Jesus angry? sad? frustrated? A little of all of that? Explain why you think so.
- Which one of the “woes” Jesus pronounces strikes closest to your home? Why?
- Where might God be calling you to “speak truth to power”? How can that be a way of bringing peace to the community or to your life?
- Recall a time when you focused on the plank rather than the splinter (see Matthew 7:3-5). What happened?
