Questions to Discuss or Ponder:

  1. What prayers do you remember learning as a child? Why have they stuck with you?
  2. What sorts of things hit you “in the gut”? How does that compare to what Jesus is feeling?
  3. Why is Jesus so urgent in asking for workers? What is his church not so urgent?
  4. Where, in your observation, are the “centers” where people gather today? How can we be effective in reaching people where they are?
  5. What are the “idols” or substitute gods that we most worship today? Which one is most tempting in your own life?
  6. Why do we shy away from praying for or asking for healing? In what area(s) of your life do you need healing today?
  7. What one step do you need to take to be the answer to Jesus’ prayer this week?

We live in a world where people in Barcelona, Spain spent an afternoon throwing things at and yelling at tourists to go home because they didn’t want “them” in their city. It is an “us vs. them” world, and no part of life seems untouched by our divisiveness. We live in a nation where this upcoming election threatens to tear at the very fabric of who we are, and we’ve already lived through at least a decade now where politics and opinions have torn families, relationships, communities and even churches apart.
